The people were not only "humble and penitent" but were also "firm and steadfast, and imovable, willing with all diligence to keep the commandments of the Lord"
That is a good example to all of us to be humble, penitent, firm, steadfast and imovable. I think the big part in this is that they were willing. 
We much be willing and able to do all things and to be a servent of our Lord God.
"...so great was his (Nephi) faith on the Lord Jesus Christ that Angels did minister to him daily." (3 Nephi 7:18)
They were righteous people into the Lord.
